Scholarship student George Brough has been awarded the Lisa Wilson Scholarship Fund annual prize for achievement. The Brighton-born student achieved a first class honours degree in Fashion Management with Marketing from Southampton Solent University this summer.

On receiving his award, George, who is now working as an intern at a top London fashion PR company, said: “I am delighted to win this prize. Winning a Lisa Wilson Scholarship enabled me to get through my course without having huge financial worries. That, together with the support and advice of my tutors on the course, has been a huge asset throughout my course.”

This summer the fund reached the phenomenal total of £240,000 and took the total number of scholarships, worth up to £1000 per year for the duration of their course, to 68.

Following an application from Mandela Lewis the charity has decided to support her in her quest to become a veterinarian. In 2012 Mandela graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London with a 2:1degree in bioveterinary science. She has now enrolled in the Veterinary Science Degree Course at the University of Liverpool where she is taking an accelerated course that will last four years. We are proud to be able to help her fulfill her educational dreams in the way that Lisa did and wish her every success in her career development.

On November 16th, nine new students received their bursary awards at a presentation ceremony at Southampton Solent University. This years recipients are Elizabeth Baker, Connor Goodsell, Benjamin John Griffith, Heather Katy Lewis, Stephen Obafemi, Samantha Willington, George William Baker, and Kyle Barnes. Along with these 8 there are five second-year students and four third-year students bringing the total to 17 presently at the University.

It was the tenth anniversary of Lisa’s accident on Nov 4th, and a large gathering of students, friends, and professors from the University turned out for the event in which Clive Wilson spoke about Lisa, her love for life, and how she was fulfilling her dreams when she died. A number of videos of Lisa on her travels, skydiving and bungy jumping, were shown to demonstrate to the students her adventurous personality.

A presentation was made to Charlie Hoyle – who was awarded the Lisa Wilson Outstanding Achievement Award. Charlie graduated this year with a 2:1 BA (Hons) Film.

Vice Chancellor professor Van Gore spoke on behalf of the University thanking the Wilson family for their efforts in raising money to help young students. To date some 64 students have benefitted from the bursaries and over £230,000 has been raised in Lisa’s memory. This makes Lisa’s Legacy 230 years of education as each £1000 represents a year of a students life.

A letter from a parent

We recently received this letter from the mother of a student recently granted a bursary by the Scholarship Fund:

Hello Mr Wilson

Yesterday i attended Southampton Solent Uni with my son Garry Halsey who has just started a football degree, I just wanted to say how moved my son my daughter and myself was at the tribute that you and your family have paid to your Daughter . We all sat in tears watching the photos of Lisa and listening to her music ,WOW you are right she was amazing and she did light up the room . I can only thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping my Garry to fullfill his dream to go to uni and to be able to afford it . I love my job I work with adults with Learning difficulties but it does not pay to well ,but then sometimes money isnt everything obviously to Garry it is at the moment , so thank you again for stepping in where I could not.
